September’s Mouth-Friendly Recipe 2012

Meatloaf is often a family favorite, but it’s not exactly the healthiest choice when it’s made with fatty meats and other high-calorie ingredients. This made-over recipe not only decreases the fat and calories, it manages to sneak in some added protein as well. Healthy Meatloaf Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 2 lbs. lean ground turkey
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup skim milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a skillet, use the olive oil to cook the celery and onion over medium heat for 10 minutes or until the veggies are tender. Add the garlic and cook for one more minute. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl. When it has cooled slightly, stir in the turkey, bread crumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, egg whites, salt, pepper and 1/4 cup of ketchup. In a separate bowl, combine the mustard and the remaining 1/4 cup of ketchup.
  3. Shape the meat mixture into a loaf in a 13″ x 9″ metal baking pan. Spread the ketchup and mustard sauce over the top. Cook for 55 to 60 minutes in the preheated oven. Let cool for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.
