Be a Floss Boss

Be a Floss BossLike most people, you probably spend at least part of Thanksgiving Day eating turkey, mashed potatoes and all of the trimmings. Sometimes theres pie on Thursday night, and then youll likely repeat the whole menu on Friday when you enjoy the leftovers. After all of that eating and snacking, November 27 is the perfect time to celebrate National Flossing Day!1 Even though at least 50 percent of people dont floss daily as recommended,2 taking time to do so is an important part of your oral health routine. Its the single best way to remove plaque from areas between teeth where your toothbrush cant reach.3 Unwaxed nylon dental floss on a spool is probably the most common type, but its just one of the many options available. Nylon floss is made up of multiple fibers all wound together. Here are a few others:

  • Waxed nylon dental floss is similar to regular nylon dental floss, but it slides more easily between teeth than uncoated floss.4
  • Plastic monofilament floss seems to be preferred by people in some consumer studies (even though it is more expensive) because the single fiber doesnt shred as easily as multi-fiber nylon floss.
  • Dental tape is extra-wide floss that is helpful for cleaning wide spaces between teeth.4
  • Wooden plaque remover picks are flat, wooden picks that stimulate the gums and remove plaque. Some people find them easier to use than traditional floss.4
  • A floss holder is a Y-shaped plastic tool that holds a length of floss between two prongs. It can make flossing easier for people who have trouble manipulating the floss, such as children and older adults.2

So what is the best type of floss? They all work well so its whichever one that you will use every day! Experiment with several styles if you need to, but make sure you find the floss that works best for your dental needs. And be sure to floss at least once daily not just on National Floss Day! 1 2,HD29 3,Delta5 4,21452
