Stocking Stuffer Skeptic: Does Flavored Toothpaste Really Work?

They make great stocking stuffers, but do bacon or cupcake-flavored toothpastes really do the trick when it comes to oral health? It depends. Off-the-beaten-path toothpaste flavors can be just as effective as your standard mint, as long as the active ingredient list includes fluoride to prevent tooth decay.1 The really eccentric flavors usually don’t. Your best bet is to select products that have been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Just look for their seal on the packaging.1 Feel free to include pickle-flavored toothpaste as a silly stocking stuffer, but don’t rely on it for everyday use unless it has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Remember, no matter what flavor of toothpaste ends up in your bathroom, you should brush at least twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste.2
